What is Good Soil?We all know that if you want to grow a plant of any kind, you need soil, water, and sunshine. Have you every wondered what each of these elements really provide for your plants?

The importance of keeping your plants well hydrated and with access to plenty of sunshine is well understood. The other big factor in the health of plants that is often overlooked is the quality of the soil they are growing in.

Soil is Food!

Plants “eat” the minerals and organic matter contained in the soil. If they are well “fed”, plants grow very healthy and strong. If soil does not contain enough nutrients that plants need, they can’t grow as well and may even become weak and prone to insects and withering.

You can learn more about the importance of organic matter content in the soil here.

What to Look For When Buying Your Soil

Before you purchase soil for your garden, take your time to research and understand where it comes from and what it contains.

For example, if the soil you are looking to buy says that it is guaranteed to be weed free, it may sound good at first. However, it also means that in order to guarantee the soil to be weed free, it has most likely been heat-treated to kill any weed seeds and seedlings. Unfortunately, this process also kills the very valuable microorganisms that your plants need to grow healthy and strong.

It is also important to understand the soil’s composition. Each soil being sold has different mineral and organic matter content. Look at the ingredients listed on the bag. It should contain organic matter such as compost, seaweed, manure or mushroom compost to name a few. It is also good if it contains peat or coir (coconut husks) to help with water absorption.
